Arbor or pergola? We help you decide.

An arbor is a smaller, often archway-shaped overhead structure used as a focal point at a garden entry, walkway, gate, or ceremonial spot. A pergola is a larger shade structure positioned above a patio or deck. If you want a statement piece that frames a path or doorway, you want an arbor. If you want shade for an outdoor living area, you want a pergola. Many San Antonio yards use both, matched in material and finish.

Cedar, aluminum, or wrought iron.

Western red cedar is the most common arbor material in San Antonio. It carries a warm, traditional look, sands to a smooth finish, and seals well for Hill Country UV. We hand-cut decorative ends, sand by hand, and finish with a marine-grade sealer.

Powder-coated aluminum gives a clean, modern profile with no maintenance. Wrought iron, with hand-formed scrollwork, creates a heritage estate feel that pairs beautifully with limestone walls and Hill Country stone.

Where arbors shine in a San Antonio yard.

Garden gate entries, side-yard walkways, courtyard transitions, vegetable-garden archways, climbing-rose features, and ceremonial spots for weddings and family gatherings. We have also installed arbors as outdoor classroom or photography focal points in larger Hill Country estates.

HOA, permits, and engineering.

Permits are not typically required for a freestanding arbor under 8 feet tall, but HOA approval is in most master-planned neighborhoods. We prepare the full architectural review package, including site plans, material specs, and a project narrative that fits your HOA's submission portal.

Pairing arbors with decks, pergolas, and fences.

When an arbor is part of a larger outdoor project, we design all elements together so finishes, post profiles, decorative detail, and stain all align. The arbor becomes the visual entry into your outdoor living space, not an afterthought bolted on after the build.

How we work

Four predictable steps. Same for every project.

  • 1

    Consultation

We meet at your home, walk the backyard, and listen to how you actually want to use the space. A real conversation about the project, with no pressure and no hard sell.

  • 2

    Design and scope planning

We sketch the layout in place, talk through structure and elevation, and define a clear written scope so everyone knows exactly what is being built.

  • 3

    Material selections

We bring real material samples to your home and compare them in your own light. Composite versus cedar, roof options, railings, and finishes, chosen with you, not guessed.

  • 4

    HOA and permit coordination

When your project needs HOA approval or a city permit, we prepare the submission package and handle the back-and-forth so you are not chasing paperwork.

  • 5

    Build and progress updates

A tight, trusted crew builds the project on a written schedule. You get regular progress updates, so you always know what is happening and what comes next.
