Flagstone, pavers, stamped concrete, or travertine?

Pavers are the most flexible and forgiving choice for Hill Country soils because individual units flex with ground movement and can be lifted and reset if needed. Stamped concrete delivers the most pattern variety at the best price but needs careful jointing to avoid the cracks that ruin most San Antonio concrete patios by year seven.

Flagstone is the premium natural-stone option. Every piece is unique, no two patios look alike, and properly set flagstone lasts longer than the house. Travertine sits in the middle on price and is the right answer at pool decks because the natural air pockets in the stone keep the surface cool underfoot.

Drainage is the single biggest reason patios fail.

Most failed San Antonio patios were never engineered for where the water actually goes during a hard rain. We start every project by mapping how water moves across your lot, then grade the patio for positive slope away from the house, plus French drains, area drains, or catch basins where the lot demands it.

Permeable paver systems are a great option where city code or HOA rules require on-site water infiltration, or where you simply want to keep stormwater out of the street and your neighbors' yards. We carry both traditional and permeable Belgard systems and walk you through the right call for your lot.

Designed for Hill Country caliche, clay, and limestone.

San Antonio and the Hill Country sit on a mix of dry clay, caliche, and shallow limestone, all of which move differently under load and water. We adjust base preparation by soil type: deeper compacted base on expansive clay, geotextile fabric over caliche, and anchored bond beams where limestone is close to surface. The patio you walk on year one looks the same year ten.

Joint stabilization is the other Hill Country detail most contractors skip. We use polymeric joint sand on pavers and a flexible polyurethane joint sealer on stamped concrete to keep weeds out and prevent the hairline cracks that follow Texas freeze-thaw cycles.

HOA submissions handled for you.

Most ground-level patios in San Antonio do not require a city permit, but most HOAs in Stone Oak, Alamo Ranch, Boerne, Helotes, Fair Oaks Ranch, and Schertz require Architectural Control Committee review. We prepare the submission package, including the site plan, material samples, and color renderings, and submit on your behalf. Average approval is 2 to 4 weeks.

If your project triggers a permit, for example a patio tied to a retaining wall or covering a utility easement, we pull the permit and coordinate inspections as a line item in the quote.

Tying into decks, pools, fire pits, and outdoor kitchens.

Most great Hill Country backyards combine multiple surfaces. A deck off the back door for the dining table, stepping down to a flagstone fire pit, or a stamped concrete patio wrapping a pool. We engineer the elevation changes, drainage transitions, and material meets so each surface reads as part of the larger plan.

On pool decks specifically, we use cool-touch travertine or paver systems, generous coping detail, slip-resistant surface treatments, and integrated deck drains that move splash-out water away from the slab and the house.

Manufacturer warranties registered in your name.

Belgard concrete pavers carry a lifetime manufacturer warranty against material defects, passed through to you on day one. Flagstone and travertine carry supplier warranties against splitting. Sealer warranties run 2 to 5 years depending on product.

Every warranty gets registered in your name at the walk-through, with the paperwork handed to you on the spot and a digital copy stored in your client portal. We send annual reminders for resealing schedules on stamped concrete and flagstone so the surface holds its color past year ten.
